Have you ever wondered about the local music scene in the Bay Area? It’s fascinating to explore the musicians and music groups that have called our area home. Jerry Garcia, for example, taught guitar and banjo to local musicians when he worked at Dana Morgan Music Shop in Palo Alto. He even formed the Warlocks here, which later became known as “The Grateful Dead.” Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were part of the music group Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band, which performed locally before joining Fleetwood Mac. Carlos Santana used to play gigs in high school, and Grace Slick, who went on to form Jefferson Airplane, was one of many famous people who attended Palo Alto High School. In fact, there’s a plaque on Santa Cruz Avenue in downtown Menlo Park that marks the spot where Jerry Garcia’s Warlocks made their first public appearance on May 5, 1965. With those [dated] examples you might agree that this is a ‘groovy’ place for music.
